Georgia DOT preps for winter weather in metro Atlanta Monday

The Georgia Department of Transportation will be working overnight to prepare metro Atlanta roads for possible winter weather.

GDOT crews began treating the region’s interstates with brine at 9 a.m. Sunday, according to spokeswoman Natalie Dale. They also applied salt and rock to bridges.

Dale said crews will continue to treat roads overnight and through rush hour Monday.

Much of the region is under a winter weather advisory. Precipitation is possible early Monday, and that could mean icy road conditions until the temperature rises above freezing late in the morning.

Winter weather is just one of the hazards that could make Monday's traffic especially bad. Tens of thousands of Georgia and Alabama fans will descend on Mercedes-Benz Stadium Monday evening for the college football national championship.

President Donald Trump will attend the game, and his motorcade will mean a series of rolling road closures at rush hour. His route has not been announced.

GDOT is encouraging people employed downtown or in Midtown to work elsewhere Monday, if they can.
