Actress should have kept opinion to herself
Meryl Streep’s rant at the Golden Globe Awards reminds me once again why I don’t watch these types of programs and haven’t for 20 years. On a night set aside to honor the achievements of those in the entertainment industry, Streep chose instead to use it as a political forum. All she had to do was walk on stage, grab her piece of tin, say thanks and walk off stage, but she couldn’t even do that right. She is certainly entitled to her opinion, but if everyone given an award that night would have stated their political opinion, the show would still be airing. So why does Streep think her opinion is more important than those other actors opted to remain silent? If the Golden Globes are going to be used as a political forum, perhaps Donald Trump should use his inaugural address to give a critical review of La La Land, a place where Streep apparently resided that night.

Letter- writer’s analogy doesn’t hold water
The letter-writer on Jan. 9 called liberals hypocrites because they support organizations and celebrities who declined to participate in Trump’s inauguration because of their beliefs, but do not support the baker who refuses to make a cake for anyone whose beliefs conflict with that baker. The writer needs to differentiate volunteers from retail business owners. Organizations and celebrities who perform at inaugurations do so on a volunteer basis. Volunteers usually do their work because they believe in the cause they are volunteering for. Forced volunteerism is “oxymoronic.” A retail business owner is not a volunteer. That business owner, more than likely, receives tax breaks and perhaps a Small Business Administration loan, monies provided by all taxpayers. To take tax money provided by American citizens of all different beliefs, then refuse service to those same Americans is not only hypocritical, but dishonest.
