For the second time in six months, Clayton county has ousted its chief operating officer.
Commissioners voted at their April 21 meeting not to renew Alex Cohilas’ contract, which included $65,000 for six months of work. Cohilas, a fixture in Clayton government, was brought out of retirement last November to run the day-to-day operations of the county after the board abruptly fired Arrelle Anderson from the job. At the time Cohilas’ hire was seen as a controversial move because other candidates had not been vetted for the job. In fact, Chairman Jeff Turner urged the commissioners before the vote to do a national search for Anderson’s replacement.
Cohilas’ dismissal was immediate. He was replaced by county parks and recreation director Detrick Stanford who will serve as interim COO.
Turner was in a meeting at the time of this posting and was unavailable for comment. Efforts to reach Cohilas also were unsuccessful.
