Suspect arrested in shooting deaths behind Roswell Publix

A 20-year-old man was arrested Wednesday and will be charged in the shooting deaths of two 17-year-olds, police said. But investigators declined to discuss a possible motive or whether the suspect knew the teenagers.

Jeffrey Hazelwood of Roswell was taken into custody early Wednesday at an area gas station, Roswell police Chief Rusty Grant said. He was being held at the Roswell detention center, but will be taken to the Fulton County jail, where he will be charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Natalie Henderson and Carter Davis, both of Roswell, Grant said.

Hazelwood was already in custody by the time officers executed a search warrant at a small ranch on Gilhams Road, off Mabry Road and just outside of the Roswell city limits. Grant declined to discuss how that search was related to the case, but said currently, there are no other suspects.

“We believe he acted alone,” Grant said.

The chief said cellphone records from various phones were crucial in identifying Hazelwood as the suspect. He also mentioned messaging apps on cellphones as being useful in the investigation.

A delivery driver spotted the bodies of the teens on the ground behind the King Plaza Publix on Woodstock Road around 6 a.m. Monday. Later that day, police identified the victims as Natalie, who attended Roswell High School, and Carter, who attended River Ridge High School in Woodstock.

The deaths shocked the communities at both schools, where both Natalie and Carter were good students.
