Producer pulls plug on Tavis Smiley’s ‘Death of a King’ tour

Tavis Smiley’s problems appear to be mounting.

Mills Entertainment said it is pulling the plug on Smiley’s “Death of a King: A Live Theatrical Experience” after the popular host and best-selling author was accused of misconduct.

The show was scheduled for the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on April 2 and in Savannah on April 8.

“In light of the recent allegations concerning Tavis Smiley, Mills Entertainment will not be moving forward with the Death of A King project at this time,” the company said in a statement. “ We believe deeply in the message of this production and the importance of commemorating Dr. King in this crucial moment; however, we take seriously the allegations and will be suspending our relationship with Tavis Smiley and T.S. Productions.

Mills Entertainment promotes and produces branded live entertainment, according to its website.

Smiley has not issued a statement regarding Mill’s decision to cancel production.

The show focuses on the last year of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life before his assassination in 1968.

Earlier this week, PBS indefinitely suspended distribution of “Tavis Smiley” following an investigation that found “credible” allegations regarding sexual misconduct.

Smiley vowed to fight back.

In a statement, Smiley said he had the “utmost respect for women and celebrate the courage of those who have come forth to tell their truth. To be clear, I have never groped, coerced, or exposed myself inappropriately to any workplace colleague in my entire broadcast career, covering 6 networks over 30 years.”

He did, however, appear to admit to having a consensual relationship.

“If having a consensual relationship with a colleague years ago is the stuff that leads to this kind of public humiliation and personal destruction, heaven help us.”

Cobb Energy Centre said  ticketholders to contact Ticketmaster for reimbursement and details.
