Traffic is building across the metro area, with most of the Northern Perimeter and Downtown Connector experiencing heavy congestion, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
A deadly multi-vehicle crash involving several tractor-trailers on I-285 on the Inner Loop at Camp Creek Parkway was cleared after blocking two lanes for about six hours, leaving heavy delays in its wake, the Traffic Center reported.
A crash on the Connector at Langford Parkway in the right two lanes is causing delays. In Gwinnett County, a crash in the center lane is also causing delays on I-85 North near Jimmy Carter Boulevard.
Much of metro Atlanta got a welcome break from the daily afternoon storms, though there’s still a chance for popup showers this evening, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan downgraded the chance of isolated storms from 30 percent to 20 percent today.
The dry weather is doing nothing for the heat. Atlanta hit a high of 93 degrees a little after 3 p.m., which is the highest temperature of the year so far.
“We’ll all heat up today,” Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said. “It’s going to be hot. It’s going to be steamy. Uncomfortable.”
Daily high temperatures should surpass 90 degrees all week ahead of the official start of summer Thursday. Wednesday could be just as hot with an expected high of 93 degrees, according to Channel 2. The average high for this time of year is 87, according to Channel 2.
A ridge of pressure over the Southeast will keep rain chances low over the next few days, but Monahan said they will only build back up again to the 40 percent range this weekend and through next week.
