After a brief warm up, temperatures are now nearing the 40s.
A freeze warning was issued Tuesday afternoon and is expected to last through Wednesday morning for metro Atlanta and other parts of North Georgia, the National Weather Service reported.
That means subfreezing temperatures are possible.
“It will be even colder Wednesday morning,” Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said. “Let the pets stay inside.”
The City of Atlanta opened an emergency warming center at the Old Adamsville Recreation Center on 3404 Delmar Lane at 6 p.m. Tuesday and it will remain open until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The center will reopen between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
The current temperature is 50 degrees.
Atlanta reached the expected high, 53 degrees, just after 4:30 p.m. That is more than 10 degrees lower than the average high of 64 for this time of year, according to Channel 2.
Highs are expected to stay in the low 50s one more day before increasing to the low 60s Thursday. By Friday, the high is expected to get near 70.
Warmer than average temps are expected March 18-22, Channel 2 reported.
