Heavy rain has moved into metro Atlanta on Sunday morning in the wake of destructive storm system that moved across the South this weekend.

“Fortunately, the storms have weakened as they moved into North Georgia,” said Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.

By mid-morning, about half an inch of rain had fallen in the Atlanta area.

Despite the rain, the pollen count from trees and weeds remained extremely high Sunday.

Storms began moving into northwest Georgia on Saturday evening, where a flash flood watch is in effect today for Rabun County.

Downpours were hitting metro Atlanta this morning as the storm system slowly moves through the area, Monahan said. The threat of thunderstorms exist for this morning into early afternoon, especially in East Georgia.

Then the rain is expected to clear out through the afternoon, leaving behind cooler temperatures with the highs dropping down into the 50s after being in the 60s from this morning, Monahan said.

Tonight, temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 40s with the possibility of “passing, wet mountain snowflakes” in the uppermost part of the state, Monahan said.

Over the weekend, the storm system left a path of destruction with its strong winds. A tornado hit Arkansas, and Mississippi and Alabama had 5 to 6 inches of rain in some spots as the storm system slowly made its way to Georgia over the weekend.
