Thinking of booking a nearby getaway as the weather gets warmer? You don’t have to look very far for an enjoyable stay.
In fact, two of Georgia’s hotels were recently named the best hotels in the South by popular Southern culture magazine Southern Living.
Based on more than 22,000 online reader surveys, Southern Living created “The South’s Best” awards, its first-ever listing for the best-loved places in 13 different categories.
In the best hotels category, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel on Georgia’s Atlantic coast ranked third of the list of 10.
At the turn of the century, the island resort hotel was a private club with some big-name members such as J.P. Morgan, William Rockefeller and Joseph Pulitzer.
Today, the Victorian landmark is a popular wedding venue and one of Georgia’s top hotels.
Savannah’s Mansion on Forsyth Park — beloved for its southern hospitality, on-site spa and restaurant — came in at No. 6 on Southern Living’s list.
The top choice in Southern Living’s ranking was The Inn on Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, which the magazine described as a staying at “a Downton-style weekend house party.”
Georgia icons were also recognized in several other categories. For the best inns award, Savannah’s Foley House Inn came out on top.
And both Savannah and Atlanta made the magazine’s top 10 best cities in the South list.
