House releases Democrats’ rebuttal to GOP memo on alleged government surveillance abuses

Sports Writer

Steve Hummer writes sports features for the AJC, mainly for the Sunday section. He covers a range of sports and topics. Hummer has toiled in the fields of sport for 24 years for the AJC. It was shortly after he arrived in Atlanta from Florida that the city’s fortunes skyrocketed – Atlanta won the Olympic Games, the Braves went from worst to first, Evander Holyfield ascended to the heavyweight championship. He thinks it was merely coincidence, but who can know for sure? He has been privileged to cover Bobby Cox back when he had his original knees and Mark Richt when he had his own hips. Man, those guys are getting old. His most prized artifact is a trophy sent him by an angry friend of former Falcons’ coach and cowboy impersonator Jerry Glanville that features Hummer’s column photo taped on the south end of a north bound jackass. In the jargon of every team injury report, Hummer is day-to-day.

A Bulldog in spirit, a driver by blood, Elliott seeks any kind of breakthrough
You think you had a tough day after Georgia went overtime late into the night before losing the national championship game to Alabama. You didn’t have to get up before dawn, fly to Texas and drive 180 mph in a circle. “That was a bummer, for sure,” Chase Elliott said. Born an Elliott and born in Georgia means that he is...

Atlanta Motor Speedway moves up start time of Sunday’s race
With rain forecast for race day, Atlanta Motor Speedway officials announced an hour earlier start time for Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. The scheduled drop of the green flag is now 1 p.m., as opposed to the original 2 p.m. start time. That subsequently moves up the scheduled start time for all the pre-race events. Gates will...

Racing needs more personality? What about Brad Keselowski?
First, before we even get to Brad Keselowski’s underappreciated pizazz, his return to Atlanta Motor Speedway, where last year he hit all lights just right, and his various thoughts on saving stock-car racing as we know it, there’s the matter of his collusion with the self-driving car. It’s right there in his blog, the confession...

A Braves new spring, from batting cage English to walks on wild side
If Socrates could have thrown a sinker, this is what it would have been like: To set the scene, it is a little after 8 in the morning, early in the Braves’ spring-training cycle when only pitchers and catchers are required to be in Florida. And before that time of day when any of them are obliged to sweat. There is not a soul in the...

Woods looks a little better, but is that enough to challenge at the Masters?
The Masters looms 42 days hence. The gentlemen of the PGA Tour played their first competitive round of the calendar year in the same time zone as Augusta on Thursday, so it must be about time to get serious. Tiger Woods – remember him, he was more popular in the early 2000s than even Freedom Fries or Pokemon cards – was among...

Guzan’s goal: Set tone for Atlanta United’s second season
Soccer’s goal mouth is, as it has been for the past century and a half or so, 24 feet wide by 8 feet high. Such an expanse, intruded upon from all angles, is not to be manned by the small, the timid or the unassuming. Atlanta United’s Brad Guzan is the kind of figure you’d want either at the door of a rowdy country bar or...

Braves catchers define the ideal of teamwork
When either head of the Braves’ two-headed, Tyler Flowers/Kurt Suzuki catching arrangement talks about one of the better ideas of the 2017 season, some refreshingly unselfish thoughts spill out.  You want the cure for the common self-absorbed athlete? Take these two quotes and call me in the morning.  “It was almost...

Braves set spring agenda: Get ready to compete
Gather ‘round, as did the Braves full squad Monday morning in an outfield tribal meeting before the first total workout of spring. Before the drilling – and the Braves would open with what seemed to be an especially long session on Day One – there would be the messaging. Each baseball season has to begin with a message,...

Thompson’s age is 66 but his Daytona 500 finish is 22
While carnage may be one driver’s bane, it can be another driver’s blessing. When all the fractured sheet metal had been towed back to the garage, when the census was complete of great drivers turned to pedestrians by the ravages of restrictor plate racing, look who was coming home with a nice, fairly clean 22nd place finish in...

No. 3 takes checkered flag at Daytona 500 once more
What if they held a race and the car was the star? It’s just inanimate sheet metal and unholy power, after all. But slap the right number on it, place it in the perfect context of place and time, humanize it just short of making it talk, and you have a different kind of headliner for Sunday’s big car fight. Spell it out in big...

Chipper Jones gets Hall of Fame treatment at Daytona
Among the many perks of being newly named to Baseball’s Hall of Fame, apparently, is a great seat in the Daytona 500 pre-race drivers meeting. There was Chipper Jones up front Sunday afternoon, perched between NASCAR’s most popular former driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., on his right and one of Hollywood’s most popular actresses...
