Steve Hummer

Sports reporter

Steve Hummer writes sports features for the AJC, mainly for the Sunday section. He covers a range of sports and topics. Hummer has toiled in the fields of sport for 24 years for the AJC. It was shortly after he arrived in Atlanta from Florida that the city’s fortunes skyrocketed – Atlanta won the Olympic Games, the Braves went from worst to first, Evander Holyfield ascended to the heavyweight championship. He thinks it was merely coincidence, but who can know for sure? He has been privileged to cover Bobby Cox back when he had his original knees and Mark Richt when he had his own hips. Man, those guys are getting old. His most prized artifact is a trophy sent him by an angry friend of former Falcons’ coach and cowboy impersonator Jerry Glanville that features Hummer’s column photo taped on the south end of a north bound jackass. In the jargon of every team injury report, Hummer is day-to-day.

Braves Manager of the Year: ‘The best is yet to come’
At the other end of the awards spectrum from where Ronald Acuna and his Rookie of the Year plaque reside, there you’ll find Brian Snitker, the overnight sensation 40 years in the making. This baseball awards season the Braves certainly had it all covered, from the 20-year-old Acuna to the 63-year-old Snitker, with a trove of Gold Gloves...

Kennesaw State set to baptize SunTrust Park in ways of football
They began this season at the site formerly known as Turner Field. They’ll end the regularly scheduled part of their program at SunTrust Park. So, there’s the new Kennesaw State football recruiting pitch: “Come to KSU – it’s a Big South championship wrapped in a baseball fantasy camp.”  The Owls will...

More than just a pretty team, Atlanta United is playoff tough, too
The Illustrated Playoff History of Atlanta United is a brief tome. But being set in Atlanta, you know that even this virtual pamphlet had to contain a high concentration of bitter dregs.     Sunday, though, was an entirely new chapter. The second-year soccer team won a playoff game for the first time at home, and won it...

Yes, a receiver can make a difference at Tech - just ask Stewart
Brad Stewart is a Georgia Tech wide receiver. Yes, Georgia Tech does deploy wide receivers. And sometimes, it’s widely rumored, they even receive, although there isn’t always much physical evidence to back up such a theory. Saturday night against Miami, the senior Stewart had himself a real, live receiving touchdown. An important...

Richt in search of some relief on this trip to Georgia Tech
Bobby Dodd Stadium always has served as an unwilling sanctuary for Mark Richt. A grudging safe place for him to come and forget the stresses of the college coaching world while picking up an automatic victory over Georgia Tech. A sort of spa, really, minus only the seaweed body wrap and the vigorous exfoliation.  Man, is he in need of...

Falcons’ Sarkisian won’t return fire on critics now that offense is rolling
The room is all yours now, Sark. The Falcons’ offense is running on all 11 cylinders, with an almost cruel efficiency. You’ll never have a better chance to crow and strut than this. So, how ’bout it? Wouldn’t you like to give one little verbal middle finger to every amateur coach out there who was convinced you couldn&rsquo...

In second half, can Ryan rise above other excellent QBs in his midst?
Quarterback play in the NFL in general is on a nice little uptick, which only makes sense. In a nation of 325 million, there should be at least a dozen souls who can make running an offense look somewhat less daunting than captaining a nuclear sub. It should always surprise and sadden you when that position goes begging because given the...

Crean looks to breathe new spirit into Bulldogs basketball
Tom Crean’s players at Georgia will tell you that the new men’s basketball coach comes to the gym with the kind of relentless drive found in all your best generals, long-haul truckers and timeshare salespeople.    Testifies Bulldogs big man Nicolas Claxton: “Honestly, I’ve never had a coach push me in...

Bulldogs try to mute Alabama talk - good luck with that
To the words and phrases that shall not be spoken around the Georgia football program – you know, ones like “quarterback controversy,” “creampuff schedule,” and “lighten up, it’s only a game” – you may now add this latest. “Yeah, that’s nice, but can you beat Alabama.&rdquo...

A winning day for Tech defense - and the Swilling name
The difference that new coordinator Nate Woody has made with the Georgia Tech defense has not been always evident. The unit is prone to great, whiplashing fluctuations. One minute, fortress wall. The next, swinging saloon door.   The difference that a Swilling can make on defense, however, has been a proven fact for the better part...

It’s Crean’s turn now to make basketball important at Georgia
Many have tried to redraw the map at Georgia, giving basketball a major, lasting place somewhere on it. Bless their hearts. It’s Tom Crean’s turn now. Thursday was a debut of sort for the Bulldogs’ new coach, his first game against out-of-towners inside Stegeman Coliseum. Just an exhibition, free of charge, against West...
