Steve Hummer

Sports Writer

Steve Hummer writes sports features for the AJC, mainly for the Sunday section. He covers a range of sports and topics. Hummer has toiled in the fields of sport for 24 years for the AJC. It was shortly after he arrived in Atlanta from Florida that the city’s fortunes skyrocketed – Atlanta won the Olympic Games, the Braves went from worst to first, Evander Holyfield ascended to the heavyweight championship. He thinks it was merely coincidence, but who can know for sure? He has been privileged to cover Bobby Cox back when he had his original knees and Mark Richt when he had his own hips. Man, those guys are getting old. His most prized artifact is a trophy sent him by an angry friend of former Falcons’ coach and cowboy impersonator Jerry Glanville that features Hummer’s column photo taped on the south end of a north bound jackass. In the jargon of every team injury report, Hummer is day-to-day.

A raucous day at Tour Championship: Woods, Fowler jump to share of lead
Rickie Fowler was in mid-dissection of his quite-fine 65 on Thursday, when just over his shoulder there came a mighty roar from the 18th green. You just got company atop the leaderboard, young man. Your thoughts? “I don’t know who it was,” he said. Really? You have no clue? “No.” There is no roar quite like a...

Big bopper Woodland learning to love short game, too
Gary Woodland has been a bomber pilot since he turned pro in 2007. But it’s not the showy length of the tee that brings him comfort at the end of the day. “Putting makes everything better,” he said Thursday. “I sleep better. I eat better. Everything is better when you make putts.” Woodland was in for a carefree...

Woods learns that a man’s gotta know his limitations
Tiger Woods is back at the Tour Championship for the first time since 2013. Much excitement greets him. But even he will tell you that this is not same Tiger Woods who has passed this way in the past. This Woods sounds like any other middle-aged guy dealing with the encroachments of age and aches. A very humanized Tiger Woods – granted...

Finau picks himself up at Masters, makes long walk to Tour Championship
When last Tony Finau was in Georgia, he was filming his instructional video, “How to Turn Joy to Pain in Just One Brutal Step.” Remember the Par-3 Contest at the Masters? Remember Finau bursting into one of the great spontaneous celebrations after his hole-in-one? He’s running down the fairway, galloping with glee like a...

Roll Titleist: Could there be a little Nick Saban in Justin Thomas?
It’s September in the South, a time when it’s all about the rankings. Justin Thomas lights up when he talks about No. 1. And, no, that’s not Bryson DeChambeau, who sits atop the FedEx Cup points list this week at the Tour Championship at East Lake. While Thomas comes from a great golf school, it’s worth noting that...

Another tweak coming to FedEx Cup, Tour Championship - this one’s a doozy
If this were 2019, Tiger Woods would be reporting to the first tee of the Tour Championship on Thursday already 2 under. That before he ever put pencil to scorecard. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal. If only life routinely gave you a couple-of-shots head start at daybreak.   Ah, but if this were 2019, Woods also would be starting...

Tour Championship: Haute cuisine, baby gators, sports bar vibe and, oh, yeah, golf
This week at the East Lake Golf Club, they are inviting the paying public to come and enjoy a beer that hasn’t just been brewed, but rather “crafted.” Maybe, too, take a hack on a swing simulator, get up close with a baby alligator, watch a little football on a big screen. And that’s before moving on to the Bloody...

Can we spare just a moment to appreciate Bulldogs’ offensive line?
There being little else of consequence to take from Saturday’s sacrificial rite between the hedges, might as well suck it up and get this offensive line column out of the way. Nobody with any sense spends a lot of time on the O-line, even though they should. Especially in Georgia’s case, because that unit, as much as any subset...

Behind Acuna, Braves overcome Scherzer, Nationals
The contest Friday night between established greatness and limitless possibility was really no contest at all. What a rout.  Get outta the way, establishment. Ronald Acuna Jr. is playing through. The Braves rookie took batting practice off three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer this night – and really complicated Scherzer&rsquo...

Freeman on the Braves’ big lead: Keep the foot on the gas
Magic number? What magic number? Freddie Freeman insisted Friday afternoon that he didn’t know the Braves magic number to win the National League East was down to a quite manageable 10 entering the weekend series with the Washington Nationals. Really (insert disbelieving tone)? “Really,” he said. Such determined obliviousness...

Braves getting healthier - activate Vizcaino and ease Camargo back into mix
There are eight Braves pitchers with at least one save this season, which gives the team a measure of flexibility in how they handle the return of oft-times closer Arodys Vizcaino.  Vizcaino, whose last appearance came July 11, was activated from the 60-day disabled list and returned Friday to the Braves’ bullpen. Not that he&rsquo...
