Steve Hummer

Sports Writer

Steve Hummer writes sports features for the AJC, mainly for the Sunday section. He covers a range of sports and topics. Hummer has toiled in the fields of sport for 24 years for the AJC. It was shortly after he arrived in Atlanta from Florida that the city’s fortunes skyrocketed – Atlanta won the Olympic Games, the Braves went from worst to first, Evander Holyfield ascended to the heavyweight championship. He thinks it was merely coincidence, but who can know for sure? He has been privileged to cover Bobby Cox back when he had his original knees and Mark Richt when he had his own hips. Man, those guys are getting old. His most prized artifact is a trophy sent him by an angry friend of former Falcons’ coach and cowboy impersonator Jerry Glanville that features Hummer’s column photo taped on the south end of a north bound jackass. In the jargon of every team injury report, Hummer is day-to-day.

The raising of a Hall of Famer: For Chipper Jones, the perfect upbringing
How would you, from scratch, make a Hall of Fame switch-hitter? How would you construct not only one swing that would hold up against the oncoming freight train of a major league fastball, but also its mirror image on the other side of the plate?  Albert Einstein, somewhat of an expert on the subject, once determined that, “The...

Francoeur believes Braves will make his job interesting through September
Those who might believe that the Braves were leaking a little oil entering the All-Star break – that shiny slick left behind the eight losses in their past 11 games is a clue – may want to take their concerns to Jeff Fancoeur. Not that he’s the mechanic who can fix the problem. His playing days were done following the 2016...

This chasing Clemson is just getting exhausting
It’s kind of a kick to see how people deal with dominance, as long as you’re not the one getting rolled. Take all those in the ACC chasing Clemson. There are different approaches to dealing with this particular orange overlord, now that it has won three consecutive conference titles. And it’s the overwhelming favorite...

Tech’s Paul Johnson holds his ground like his team holds the ball
It should come as zero surprise that even in this age when college football coaches are swapped in and out like so many zip drives, Paul Johnson is beginning his second decade at the same program. After all, he always has been big – real big – on time of possession. Come to think of it, he is like one of his Georgia Tech possessions...

Mullen looks to re-establish ‘The Gator Standard’
There can be no doubt, Dan Mullen is a Florida Gator again, heart and sole. If the new six-year, $36 million deal to leave Mississippi State for Florida wasn’t evidence enough, how ‘bout those shoes he wore to his SEC Media Days news conference Tuesday? Known to accessorize to reflect his employer, Mullen showed up in sneakers...

Bulldogs’ Ledbetter has great story to tell at SEC Media Days
As a sophomore, Georgia defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter walked the narrow ledge of trouble. Cautiously, deliberately, putting one foot in front of the other. Watch your step, young man, because the drop is sheer.    But look at him Tuesday, a senior serving as one of three players speaking on behalf of the Bulldogs at Tuesday&rsquo...

What does enigmatic LSU have for Bulldogs and rest of SEC this season?
Like the summer weather in Atlanta and a stock broker’s mood, LSU defies prediction. The Tigers are the roulette wheel of the SEC, the tumbling dice, the game of chance.   This is of particular interest/concern around certain parts of Georgia on those rare years that the Bulldogs have a date with the great unknown of the SEC...

Atlanta: Soccer City, USA
It is a realization that I have put off for as long as possible. Fought it, really, like the very idea of growing old.   But there is no more denying the patently obvious.  I live in a soccer city. We all live in a soccer city. Perhaps one of the most vibrant soccer cities in the whole of the US of A. A veritable hub of hands-free...

Markakis travels long, straight line to first All-Star game
The Nick Markakis-Ryan Flaherty carpool to SunTrust Park – express service to every night game – is as regular as church bells. There’s a Markakis in the car, so how could it be otherwise?  “Leave at 1:30, every day,” smiled Flaherty, who is both brother-in-law and teammate to the Braves All-Star right-fielder...

A Tiger-Phil match should be easy to ignore - but will it be, really?
They – presumably promoters who have run out of stuff for motorcycles to jump over and things for Conor McGregor to do – are priming the pump now for a $10 million match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. It’s a winner-take-all-but-surely-both-guys-profit format. As far back as May, at the Players Championship, Mickelson...

Braves All-Stars symbolize a Four-Star start to this season
The last time the Braves had as many as four players make the All-Star team – 2012 – it was not assigned the kind of meaning given to the 2018 haul. Six years later, three of the Braves class of ’12 are no longer in uniform (Chipper Jones, Dan Uggla and Michael Bourn). The other, closer Craig Kimbrel, was dealt away...
