Susannah Scaroni claimed her first victory, while Daniel Romanchuk repeated in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race’s Shepherd Center wheelchair division.

Scaroni, 27, is a two-time Paralympian. She most recently won first place in the NYRR New York Mini 10K.

“I always just try to post the best that I can,” she said. “So I felt like I did that today. I felt good.”

Romanchuk, 20, came two seconds short of the record at an unofficial 13:40 in his second consecutive Peachtree win. The champion said he wasn’t tracking the record as he ran, but gave it some thought going in.

“This is a race that all the athletes, everyone hears about from a young age,” he said. “It’s something everyone dreams of winning. It means a lot.”

Scaroni edged out friend and 2017 champ Tatyana McFadden for the win. McFadden, a seven-time Peachtree champ, spoke highly of her teammate.

“She’s a great athlete, a great person to train with,” McFadden said of Scaroni. “We were both working on our strengths and weaknesses today. She had a great race and a great year.”

Scaroni, Romanchuk and McFadden said they plan to run again in 2019.
