One-third of Atlanta homes watched UGA’s win in Rose Bowl

About one-third of all households in the Atlanta television market watched Georgia’s double-overtime victory over Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl. 

The game drew a 33.7 rating in the Atlanta market Monday, according to Nielsen figures provided by ESPN. 

Three other markets generated even higher ratings for the game – Birmingham (42.8), Oklahoma City (35.9) and Tulsa (35.6). 

The rating is the percentage of TV households in a market that watched on average. 

The 33.7 rating in Atlanta equals an audience of more than 800,000 local homes.

Nationally, the Rose Bowl -- one of this season’s two College Football Playoff semifinals -- delivered a 14.8 overnight rating across the 56 metered markets on ESPN and ESPN2.  That was up 29 percent from the corresponding semifinal on the same networks last season but below the 15.5 rating for Oregon’s win over Florida State in the Jan. 1, 2015, Rose Bowl, which was the inaugural CFP semifinal and remains the highest rated CFP semifinal telecast. 

The Georgia-Oklahoma game drew an audience of more than 26.8 million viewers nationwide, according to ESPN.

Alabama’s victory over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl on Monday night -- this season’s other CFP semifinal game -- posted a 12.5 overnight rating nationally, up 19 percent from last season’s second semifinal. 

The Sugar Bowl drew a 26.3 rating in the Atlanta market, topped only by 55.7 in Birmingham and 32.7 in Greenville, S.C.

Earlier Monday, Central Florida’s win over Auburn in Atlanta’s Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl earned a 5.1 rating across the nation’s metered markets.
