MLS Power Poll: Week 1

ajc.com

It’s time for my weekly MLS Power Poll, the only MLS Power Poll that recognizes that arbitrarily ranking teams means nothing in the grand scheme of things and is done just to spark debate and not attach importance to the reporter’s ego.

  1. Columbus (1-0)

Result: 2-0 win at Toronto.

Gregg Berhalter may be the best coach in MLS after his squad knocked off the defending champs.

Next: vs. Montreal, 1 p.m. Saturday.

-

2. Houston (1-0)

Result: 4-0 win vs. Atlanta United.

Four goals in one half should not be overlooked.

Next: vs. Vancouver, 6 p.m. Saturday.

-

3. NYCFC (1-0)

Result: 2-0 win at Sporting KC.

I’m not sure David Villa is actually aging. I’m sure I’m not surprised that KC was shut out.

Next: vs. L.A. Galaxy, 5 p.m. Sunday.

-

4. L.A. Galaxy (1-0)

Result: 2-1 win vs. Portland.

Many people in the offseason were enthusiastic about the Galaxy’s re-build in the offseason. Easy to see why after one game.

Next: at NYCFC, 5 p.m. Sunday.

-

5. San Jose (1-0)

Result: 3-2 win vs. Minnesota United.

I want to say this was impressive for the Earthquakes but I watched the Loons play a few times in the preseason.

Next: Off in league play.

-

6. L.A.F.C. (1-0)

Result: 1-0 win at Seattle.

Yes, Will Ferrell, Seattle’s fan do wave those flags all game.

Next: at Real Salt Lake, 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

-

7. Real Salt Lake (0-0-1)

Result: 1-1 draw at Dallas.

Meh.

Next: vs. LAFC, 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

-

8. Dallas (0-0-1)

Result: 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake.

Meh.

Next: Off in league play.

-

9. D.C. United (0-0-1)

Result: 1-1 draw at Orlando City.

Not too bad considering they had to fly to Orlando the day of the game because the wind storm delayed Friday’s flight.

Next: at Atlanta United, 3 p.m. Sunday.

-

10. Orlando City (0-0-1)

Result: 1-1 draw with D.C. United.

They pulled out a point in the final minutes. Probably not the grand beginning the team envisioned.

Next: vs. Minnesota United, 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

-

11. Philadelphia (1-0)

Result: 2-0 win vs. New England.

It’s hard to rank the Sons of Ben higher because I think the Revs are going to be awful this season.

Next: Off in league play.

-

12. Vancouver (1-0)

Result: 2-1 win vs. Montreal.

The same thought I shared about Philadelphia’s win applies to the Whitecaps’ victory.

Next: at Houston, 6 p.m. Saturday.

-

13. Chicago (0-0-0)

Result: DNP.

Next: vs. Sporting KC, 6 p.m. Saturday.

-

14. Colorado (0-0-0)

Result: DNP.

Next: at New England, 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

-

15. New York Red Bulls (0-0-0)

Result: DNP.

Next: vs. Portland, 7 p.m. Saturday.

-

16. Portland (0-1)

Result: 2-1 loss vs. L.A. Galaxy.

The Timbers didn’t look too bad in losing to the Galaxy in coach Giovanni Savarese’s debut.

Next: at New York Red Bulls, 7 p.m. Saturday.

-

17. Sporting KC (0-1)

Result: 2-0 loss to NYCFC

Goals? Who needs goals?

Next: at Chicago, 6 p.m. Saturday.

-

18. Montreal (0-1)

Result: 2-1 loss at Vancouver.

Hey, at least the Impact scored.

Next: at Columbus, 1 p.m. Saturday.

-

19 . Toronto (0-1)

Result: 2-0 loss to Columbus.

The champs go down at home in their opening game.

Next: Off in league play.

-

20. Seattle (0-1)

Result: 1-0 loss vs. LAFC.

You don’t lose to an expansion team in your home opener. You just don’t.

Next: Off in league play.

-

21. Minnesota United (0-1)

Result: 3-2 loss at San Jose.

Still have no idea why Abu Danladi and Christian Ramirez don’t play in the same 11.

Next: at Orlando City, 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

-

22. New England (0-1)

Result: 2-0 loss at Philadelphia.

The Revs were reduced to nine men in the game. Not exactly a promising start for Brad Freidel.

Next: vs. Colorado, 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

-

23. Atlanta United (0-1)

Result: 4-0 loss at Houston.

Don’t freak out Five Stripes fans. I don’t expect the team will be at the bottom of the poll after the next few weeks. But after Week 1….Yikes!

Next: vs. D.C. United, 3 p.m. Sunday.
