Former Georgia standout Isaiah Wynn didn’t mind sliding inside to play guard.
He was the left tackle for all of the Bulldogs’ games last season as they marched to within minutes of the national championship.
He’s set to play in the 69th Senior Bowl at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
“It’s going pretty good, coming from tackle, there are some more powerful guys and you’ve got to get your hands on them faster,” Wynn said.
In college, Wynn, who’s from St. Petersburg, Fla., was the backup right guard as a freshmen. He played left guard his sophomore and junior seasons.
So the move at the Senior Bowl was not a total change for him.
“I had more of the faster guys on the edge (at tackle),” Wynn said. “I had to just be able to (setup) quicker.”
Wynn had a strong week of practice.
“I just want to show that I can play it all, whether if it’s guard or tackle and both sides at guard,” said Wynn, who interviewed with most of the league’s 32 teams, including the Falcons. “I’m hoping to take home some things I need to work on and figure out what I need to do to get better. This experience has been great and I’m excited.”
Wynn and former N.C. State defensive linemen Justin Jones were selected as the top offensive and defensive linemen at the Senior Bowl for having the best week of practice by executive director Phil Savage.
“He took to (playing guard) like a duck to water,” Savage said in the awards video. “He was terrific. … Isaiah Wynn is going to be a long-time starter in the NFL at guard.”
Jones, who played at South Cobb High, also impressed Savage, a former NFL general manager.
"He was the one who emerged here," Savage said.
Also, wide receiver Michael Gallup, who's from Monroe and played at Colorado State, also was mentioned with the top wide receivers.
Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield was the star of Senior Bowl week. The Denver Broncos’ staff, who are coaching the North team, requested to have him on their team.
“We wanted to have the opportunity to meet him,” Broncos general manager John Elway said. “Obviously, we’ve seen what everyone else has seen and what he can do on the field and the type of player that he is. So, having a week to be around him and getting to know him was important to us.”
The Broncos are in the market to upgrade their quarterback position.
“Usually, you go to the combine and you get 15 minutes with them and then pre-draft you get 30 visits with the players,” Elway said. “This way, we to see 50 to 55 of them, be around them and get to coach them a little bit. So, it’s a big plus to spend a week with them.”
Mayfield, who may not play in the game, wanted to at least practice and show off his talent.
“Being around these guy has helped me out a lot,” Mayfield said. “Translating the verbiage and getting me used to going under center. Meeting John Elway has been a whole different story. That’s the man, the myth and the legend right there.”
Mayfield spent a lot of time answering questions about his character over his bad behavior that led to a suspension last season.
“I want to prove that I can be the best quarterback in this draft,” Mayfield said.
