Dan Quinn on the Bruce Irvin deal

Falcons to have NASCAR package: Beasley, Irvin and McKInley

Faclons head coach Dan Quinn talks about reuniting with defensive end Bruce Irvin. (Video by D. Orlando Ledbetter / AJC)

Here’s what Dan Quinn had to say the addition of defensive end Bruce Irvin on Wednesday:

On Irvin getting here: "He'll get in tonight. He's coming from the Bay area. He'll get his physical down and hopefully be at meetings and practice tomorrow."

On why they went after Irvin: "It was an opportunity for us to add another pass rusher into our group. For me, I've obviously had experience with him. He obviously has some familiarity with our team and how we want to play, the style and attitude that we rush with, so we'll feature him as a pass rusher in the group."

On Irvin coming home: "We are very fortunate to be able to have him here. It's cool for him to come back to where he's got so many roots and family. Past that, for us to add a pass rusher and not have to give away a draft pick in the future on a player in the future, this is the win-win for both sides."

On if Falcons have a NASCAR package now: "We know the groups that we are facing, so every single chance we get to add to our pass rush we are certainly going to. We are certainly at our best when we have big number of guys and we are going to try to feature them in every way that we can. We are really pumped to have him here with us and we can't wait to get going."

On Irvin's playing time: "I think that will depend on the package that we are trying to feature. It will be about the package first. That's really where our experience gels together. We'll work him, Takk (McKinley) and Vic (Beasley) and that group a good bit together tomorrow and Saturday with the game plan. We've got a lot of work to do to get him up to speed. He's up the challenge for sure."

On the locker room chemistry: "He's a real competitor. He's got real energy and toughness. That second effort, the finishing part is always going to be on hand. To add a guy with his speed and toughness into this group, he obviously fits all of the traits that we are looking for in our defense. He'll be an excellent addition for this defense."
