The Atlanta Dream announced Tuesday the signing of former Indiana Fever guard Maggie Lucas to a training-camp contract.
Lucas, 26, played two full seasons for the Fever before tearing her ACL four games into the 2016 season.
“While Maggie has had a string of bad luck with ACLs, I can say with certainty no one attacks rehab harder than she does,” Dream coach Nikki Collen said in a statement. “My hope for Maggie is that she enters training camp ready to compete at her pre-injury level.”
Before her injury in 2016, the 5-foot-10 guard from Penn State earned consecutive Big Ten Player of the Year honors in 2013 and 2014 before being drafted 21st overall by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2014 WNBA Draft.
In four seasons as a Nittany Lion, Lucas demonstrated great scoring ability, recording 2,510 career points second all-time in school history.
Lucas averaged 19 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists and shot 42.1 percent from the field and 41.5 beyond the arc at Penn State.
On the professional level, Lucas was just starting to get into her old habit of prolific scoring before tearing her ACL. In the four games she played in 2016 with the Fever, Lucas averaged 7.8 points and shot 52.4 percent from the field.
“Maggie provides instant offense as a true weapon from beyond the arc,” Collen said. “In free agency, I was looking to add pieces that would both enhance and balance the roster and I believe having floor spacers is so important to running efficient offense. I am thrilled Maggie chose Atlanta to continue her WNBA career.”
Lucas played in 64 games over three seasons and averaged 4.9 points, 0.9 rebounds per game before missing most of the 2016 season and entire 2017 season because of injury.
