Unpopular opinion, UGA edition

Summertime is slow around here. This is as close as college football gets to a dead season, and I was feeling that last night when I had no I idea what I was going to write for you. Then, like manna from heaven, this tweet popped into my timeline, giving me something to talk about as we try to kill another day on the long road to football season.

The question is simple: What’s your most unpopular Georgia sports opinion?

There are plenty of interesting opinions on tap from Georgia fans, many of which you can find retweeted on the timeline of @skinnyqb10_pls, who started this meme. Some I agree with, while others hold true to the moniker “unpopular opinion.” Here are some samples, along with my opinion on their opinion:

Now here comes my unpopular opinion: Georgia would be better off if Jacob Eason was still the quarterback.

I won’t go into my reasoning in too much depth because the very premise of this exercise means you likely don’t care about whatever point I have to make. But, in the simplest terms, I think Eason would have done just as well, if not better, than Fromm running the offense last year based on what he did as a freshman with a new coaching staff and patchwork offensive line. Which is not to say I don’t think Fromm is good. On the contrary, I think he’s very good, and I understand why he won the job over Eason. But I think Eason is a more talented passer than Fromm and has a higher ceiling.

So go ahead. Pillory me for my opinions. And while you’re at it, leave your most unpopular opinion about Georgia sports down in the comments.

Paul Myerberg of USA Today listed and analyzed the biggest game of the year for every team in his top 10. The game he picked for No. 10 Georgia should come as no surprise.

vs. Auburn, Nov. 10

There’s a case to be made for South Carolina and Florida, the two perceived rivals to Georgia’s ownership of the East Division, and maybe even a case for LSU, should the Tigers be better than expected. But the only game on Georgia’s regular-season schedule against a fellow team with title aspirations comes in the annual tilt against Auburn in November.

Elsewhere in the wide world of lists, Athlon Sports ranked the best coaches in the SEC, and Kirby Smart placed third behind No. 1 Nick Saban and No. 2 Jimbo Fisher.

Smart makes a huge jump in the coach rankings following a successful 2017 season. In his first year at the helm in 2016, Georgia finished 8-5 overall and 4-4 in SEC play. However, Smart’s second team was only a couple of plays away from winning the national championship, falling 26-23 in overtime to Alabama.

The Bulldogs finished 13-2 overall, claimed the SEC title and dominated rivals Georgia Tech and Florida by a combined score of 80-14. Georgia is also winning on the recruiting trail. After finishing with the No. 7 class in 2016, the Bulldogs inked the No. 3 haul in ’17 and claimed the best class by the 247Sports composite this cycle. Smart was one of the nation’s top assistant coaches at Alabama prior to his arrival in Athens and is one of college football’s top defensive minds.

After two years, it’s clear he’s on a fast track to a place among the top coaches in the nation and has Georgia (his alma mater) poised to contend for a playoff spot once again in 2018.

Derek Dooley keeps Missouri’s offense rolling
Derek Dooley keeps Missouri’s offense rolling

Missouri led the SEC in yards gained and points scored last season. The Tigers won their last six regular-season games as quarterback Drew Lock went on a tear. Pretty much every important piece from that unit returned in 2018 except for coordinator Josh Huepel, now the head coach at UCF. So, naturally, when Missouri coach Barry Odom went looking for...

Hefty responsibility awaits TaQuon Marshall vs. No. 3 Clemson

At the start of practice, Georgia Tech quarterbacks do plenty of throwing. There are two periods (10 minutes) of throwing routes to receivers. They move on to one-on-one drills against defensive backs. Then there’s probably three periods of “pass skelly” (seven-on-seven), coach Paul Johnson said. It’s in these sessions that...

Falcons’ guard Levitre out for the season

Falcons starting left guard Andy Levitre suffered a triceps injury and was placed on injured reserve for the season on Tuesday. “Andy worked extremely hard to get back on the field after a similar injury last year, and there is no doubt his leadership will continue to be felt this year,” Falcons Dan Quinn said.  “We have a ton...

Closer look at Georgia 2019 football schedule: Bulldogs dealt open week disadvantages

ATHENS — Coach Kirby Smart isn’t looking past Saturday’s high noon shootout at Missouri, but with the release of the 2019 Georgia football schedule, Bulldogs fans can look ahead. First impression? The SEC office has deal Georgia a tough hand with five teams having open dates — essentially an extra week of preparation...
Another tweak coming to FedEx Cup, Tour Championship - this one’s a doozy
Another tweak coming to FedEx Cup, Tour Championship - this one’s a doozy

If this were 2019, Tiger Woods would be reporting to the first tee of the Tour Championship on Thursday already 2 under. That before he ever put pencil to scorecard. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal. If only life routinely gave you a couple-of-shots head start at daybreak.   Ah, but if this were 2019, Woods also would be starting eight...
