Freshman cornerback Tre Swilling did not play in Saturday’s loss to No. 3 Clemson as he was serving a suspension for violating a team rule, coach Paul Johnson said Sunday.
Swilling had started the first three games of the season. Tech played without Swilling and the Yellow Jackets’ other starting cornerback, Jaytlin Askew, who was out with an injury.
Without Askew and Simmons, the starting cornerbacks were Lamont Simmons and Ajani Kerr. Freshman Zamari Walton also played a number of snaps in a backup role. It likely did not help Tech’s defense of Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who completed 13 of 18 passes for 176 yards and four touchdowns against one interception in leading the Tigers to a 49-21 win at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Swilling’s discipline was more severe than those handed out previously this season to B-back KirVonte Benson, safety Charlie Thomas and linebacker Quez Jackson, who were all held out of the first quarter of the season opener against Alcorn State.
Asked if Swilling would play this coming Saturday against Bowling Green, Johnson answered, “Yeah, possibly.”
