Terry Godwin, Jake Fromm and Javon Wims have a hard time replicating The Catch

ATHENS — As pretty as Terry Godwin’s now-famous catch looked, and has looked the few hundred times it’s been shown since, the Georgia receiver and two teammates may have realized just how hard a catch it was three nights later.

After Tuesday’s practice, quarterback Jake Fromm and Godwin tried to replicate the catch at Georgia’s indoor facility, with Fromm also throwing the same route to receiver Javon Wims. No defender. No pass rush.

And it still took about 10 tries before they did it.

“It was pretty hard,” Wims said. “We could have easily caught it with one hand, but to try to do it exactly …”

That meant leaping backward, reaching back and catching it with the right hand, cradling it against the shoulder and then touching the right foot in bounds before falling to the ground.

“Both of us (eventually) caught it,” Wims said, adding with a smile: “But I caught it before Terry.”

The catch will go down in program lore as one of the best, and has been replayed all over ESPN and other sports highlight shows. ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption” had a segment on Monday in which the hosts compared it to an bobbling sideline catch made Sunday by a Dallas Cowboys receiver. PTI hosts Tony Kornheieser and Michael Wilbon each rated Godwin’s the better catch.

Godwin’s feat has been compared to Odell Beckham’s catch a few years ago for the New York Giants, as well as then-Georgia receiver A.J. Green’s catch at Colorado in 2010. But Georgia sophomore tight end Charlie Woerner said it reminded him of former Georgia receiver Chris Conley’s one-handed catch at Tennessee in 2013.

Woerner echoed other teammates in saying he had seen Godwin make great catches before, whether it was practice or summer workouts.

“He’s been making these grabs that no one else can make. So I think it was only a matter of time before he made a play like that,” Woerner said.

But maybe not  quite as spectacular as what Godwin did at Notre Dame.

“I don’t think he’s had anything quite like that,” Woerner said.

One play before Godwin’s touchdown, Wims dropped a second-down pass that would have put the team closer to the goal-line. The replay shows a Notre Dame defender reaching in and getting close to the ball, but Wims said it wasn’t knocked away.

“I just misjudged it,” Wims said. “I should’ve caught it.”

But if he had, then the world would never have seen Godwin’s catch.
