Georgia Tech recruiting target Dylan Deveney, a tight end prospect from New Jersey, has withdrawn his commitment from Rutgers. It leaves open the possibility that he could sign this week with the Yellow Jackets and new coach Geoff Collins.
Since his hire, Collins has put a late rush on Deveney, whom Collins had also recruited while at Temple, hoping to add tight ends to the roster. Deveney received a home visit from Collins last Sunday and then took an official visit to Tech this weekend.
Deveney will sign on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period, he said by text message Sunday night. He had not made a final decision on what school he would select. Last week, he said he was considering Tech along with Pittsburgh and Penn besides Rutgers.
Deveney is an important prospect for Collins’ class as the Jackets’ roster is devoid of tight ends because the position was not part of coach Paul Johnson’s offense. Deveney graduated from Shawnee High in Medford, N.J., this past spring and is now playing a post-graduate year at the Hun School in Princeton, N.J.
Deveney is an unusual prospect in that he only began playing high-school football as a senior, midway through Shawnee's season, and then decided to play the season at Hun to broaden his recruitment.
Deveney's decommitment was first reported by NCAAF Nation.
