Former Georgia Tech shortstop Nomar Garciaparra was chosen for induction into the Omaha College Baseball Hall of Fame in Omaha, Neb.

Garciaparra and Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona, who played at Arizona, comprise this year’s class. Their induction will take place Saturday before the home-run derby at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, which begins at 8 p.m. and will be shown on ESPN2.

“It is an honor to be inducted into the Omaha College Baseball Hall of Fame,” Garciaparra said in a statement released by Tech. “When I think about my time in Omaha, it was truly one of the highlights of my baseball career. The experience, the environment and mostly the fans make you feel like a big leaguer. Thank you for this honor.”

Garciaparra helped lead Tech to its first appearance in the College World Series in 1994, when he hit .427 with 16 home runs, 73 RBIs and 33 stolen bases that season, including .300 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs in four games in Omaha.

After his career at Tech, Garciaparra played for the Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs and Athletics over 14 seasons in the major leagues, recording a lifetime batting average of .313, with 229 homers and 936 RBIs. His lifetime on-base percentage was .361.
