Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reported Thursday that Georgia Tech plans to interview Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt to succeed Paul Johnson as head coach.

However, Whisenhunt’s interest in coaching his alma mater may not be significant.

An Associated Press reporter quoted him as saying “To be honest with you, I heard about that when I walked off the field yesterday. I had no idea that I was really a candidate for that. I’m certainly flattered that people think that, but the focus right now is really on the Steelers.”

Johnson announced Wednesday that he is stepping aside as Tech's coach. His final game will be in a bowl game to be announced Sunday.

Whisenhunt, who is from Augusta, played for Tech from 1980-84 and Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury was a Tech letter-winner in 1981.

As an NFL player, Whisenhunt played for the Falcons from 1985-88. He also played for the Redskins in 1990 and the Jets from 1991-92.

He has been a head coach for two NFL teams -- the Arizona Cardinals from 2007-12 and the Tennessee Titans in 2014 and part of 2015. The Cardinals played in the Super Bowl at the end of the 2008 season. Whisenhunt was fired by the Titans seven games into the 2015 season. His record with Arizona was 45-51 and with Tennessee was 3-20.
