The contract extension for Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson has been completed, Tech announced Friday afternoon. Athletic director Todd Stansbury and Johnson’s Atlanta-based agent Jack Reale had been working on the extension since the 2017 season and reached an agreement in principle in January.

The extension is for an additional two years to his existing contract, pushing out to the 2022 season, which would be Johnson’s 15th at Tech. The last extension, signed at the end of the 2014 season, was to end after the 2020 season.

Terms of the extension are not known. Johnson is scheduled to earn $3.25 million in 2020.

"The money's not really an issue," Johnson told the AJC in March. "The buyout's a little different than what they were, but both sides have got skin in the game, which is what you need."

Tech failed to make a bowl game in two of the past three seasons, but Stansbury is banking on Johnson’s performance over the longer term.

Johnson is a three-time ACC coach of the year and has led Tech to four nine-win seasons in his 10 years at Tech. Tech had seven such seasons in the 51 years before Johnson’s hire.

"He's proven that he can navigate the challenges that we have at Georgia Tech and do it in a way that puts us in a position to win championships," Stansbury told the AJC in January
