‘NFL-sized’ DT Smith signs with Georgia Tech

Jackets welcome new signeesMore on the new Yellow Jackets

The Yellow Jackets gained an NFL-sized defensive tackle on Wednesday when Austin Smith signed his letter of intent to attend Georgia Tech.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound prospect verbally committed to Ted Roof’s defense on June 23. He chose the Yellow Jackets over 27 other offers from the likes of Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Arkansas and Memphis.

Smith, who played at Ola High School in McDonough, is rated as the 78th best defensive tackle in the county according to 247Sports Composite. He racked up 37 tackles this season for the Mustangs.

Smith shows a good ability to get off blockers by overpowering them with his size. The Yellow Jackets don’t graduate a single contributing defensive tackle, so Smith should bring added depth up front.

Former Georgia Tech defensive end Antonio Simmons didn’t even finish his Pro Day, but the event served its purpose. Simmons threw down a time of 4.48 seconds in the 40-yard dash and pumped out 30 bench-press reps of 225 pounds, and suddenly NFL scouts grew a lot more interested. Simmons’ agent is hopeful that his client will hear his name...

Question marks at two position groups for Tech defense

Among the Georgia Tech players inherited by new defensive coordinator Nate Woody, there are plenty that look like they are fitting in well for the Yellow Jackets. It’s particularly so at linebacker. Victor Alexander and Jaquan Henderson on the outside and Brant Mitchell and Bruce Jordan-Swilling on the inside, a potential starting four, are fast...

Considering Tech’s options with injury to Kenny Cooper

One of the main pieces of Georgia Tech’s offense watched last Friday’s spring game with his right lower leg heavily bandaged. Center Kenny Cooper moved about the west sideline of Bobby Dodd Stadium with the aid of a scooter. The Yellow Jackets had escaped serious injury in spring practice until Cooper suffered the injury in a scrimmage...
