Welcome to the Thursday edition of our Oklahoma State DieHards morning roundup, where we take you through the biggest headlines around Oklahoma State athletics.

Rule change comes too late

The NCAA introduced a new rule on Wednesday that will allow redshirt players to play in up to four games in one season without losing a year of eligibility.

It’s long overdue for teams that are forced to look toward the end of their bench near the season’s conclusion and burn a freshman’s redshirt because of a number of reasons.

Mason Rudolph’s originally planned redshirt campaign in 2014 was wasted when he was inserted into the lineup for Oklahoma State’s 11th game of the season.

He played three games total in 2014, costing him a year of eligibility. Under the new rule, Rudolph could be preparing for another year with the Cowboys instead of taking snaps behind a grumpy Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh.

Rudolph’s blown redshirt season will live on as one of the biggest “what if?” questions in Oklahoma State football history.

There’s no quarterback battle if Rudolph was eligible for 2018, and Oklahoma State likely is one of the favorites to win the Big 12 Conference.

It’s a tough break for teams in similar situations as Oklahoma State, but it will help future players enhance their collegiate careers.

The NCAA at least made the change.

Oklahoma State lands QB commit

San Clemente (Calif.) quarterback Brendan Costello is on board with the Cowboys’ 2019 group.

The 3-star prospect committed to Oklahoma State over a handful of lower-level offers on Wednesday.

It’s a solid pickup for coach Mike Gundy, who could see a California pipeline open pending Costello’s success. It also could be a huge win for Oklahoma State, which might’ve found one of the most underrated quarterback prospects in the 2019 class.
