Mills rushes for career high in yards in Tech loss to Miami

Georgia Tech freshman Dedrick Mills fell one yard short of posting the first 100-yard rushing game of his career in Saturday’s 35-21 loss to Miami at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Mills finished with 99 yards on 19 carries. Both were career highs.

“I feel like the line, they’ve been doing a good job,” Mills said. “(They) came out and did a great job blocking today. They allowed me to run hard and get what I can get.”

Tech (3-2, 1-2 ACC) coach Paul Johnson said he was determined to get Mills the ball.

Mills said he guessed that the B-back — either he or Marcus Marshall — was going to get a lot of carries based upon the way the team practiced during the week.

“Whoever was in the game was going to get the ball and go,” Mills said.

Marshall finished with 34 yards on four carries.

Mills said earlier in the week that Tech’s B-backs have a goal of reaching 150 yards in a game. They haven’t reached that mark this season. Their 133 yards on Saturday is their season-high, surpassing the 99 they rushed for in the season-opening win against Boston College.

Mills led the Yellow Jackets in rushing yards (201) and touchdowns (five) before Saturday, averaging 67 yards in three games. His previous highest rushing total in a game was 75 yards in last week’s loss to Clemson.
