Jordan Mason explains what happened to the ‘Ponchez’

Georgia Tech B-back Jordan Mason is the player to be named later.

Speaking with media Tuesday, the redshirt freshman took the time to explain why he is identified as “Jordan Mason” and not “Jordan Ponchez-Mason,” as he was last year.

“Oh, man, that’s a long story,” Mason said. “I actually need to say this.”

As long stories go, it’s not quite “War and Peace.” Maybe just “War.” It turns out that Ponchez is Mason’s middle name.

“Somehow, in the mix, somebody got Ponchez-Mason as my last name,” Mason said.

Indeed, he was “Jordan Ponchez-Mason” from national signing day in 2017 in team publications.

“It just completely changed when I got here,” Mason said. “I was like, ‘OK, wow.’”

Jordan Mason’s ‘time to shine’ has arrived

It stayed that way at least through the spring game earlier this year. In the box score, 22 rushing yards were credited to “Ponchez-Mason.” The correction has since been made. He is back to “Jordan Mason” on the Tech website and media guide.

Mason is the second Tech player in recent years from Tennessee with the last name Mason, following Shaquille Mason, the former All-American guard. The two are not related.

A raucous day at Tour Championship: Woods, Fowler jump to share of lead

Rickie Fowler was in mid-dissection of his quite-fine 65 on Thursday, when just over his shoulder there came a mighty roar from the 18th green. You just got company atop the leaderboard, young man. Your thoughts? “I don’t know who it was,” he said. Really? You have no clue? “No.” There is no roar quite like a Tiger Woods...

Big bopper Woodland learning to love short game, too

Gary Woodland has been a bomber pilot since he turned pro in 2007. But it’s not the showy length of the tee that brings him comfort at the end of the day. “Putting makes everything better,” he said Thursday. “I sleep better. I eat better. Everything is better when you make putts.” Woodland was in for a carefree evening...

ATHENS — Georgia-Missouri is going to be another family affair for the Dooleys. You may recall those awkward years not so long ago when Vince and Dooley Barbara found themselves dressing in unfamiliar orange when their son Derek Dooley was head coach at Tennessee. The Dooleys never really got a chance to get used to it, however, ...
