Georgia-Vanderbilt basketball: Time, TV, how to watch online (March 7, 2018)

ST. LOUIS — There are a few reasons to believe that the Georgia men’s basketball team will see its season end on Wednesday night, and possibly the coaching tenure of Mark Fox will end with it.

There are also some reasons to believe Fox and the Bulldogs can put that off for another day.

Georgia is the 12th seed in the SEC tournament, and will face 13th-seeded Vanderbilt in the opening game of the SEC tournament. It will be one of those games that likely takes place in less than a charged atmosphere, in front of plenty of empty seats.

When the team’s met in the regular season, Vanderbilt crushed Georgia by 15 points, reigning 3-pointers in the second half. That doesn’t bode well for UGA’s chances. Neither does the fact that the Bulldogs come in having lost two games in a row, and is dealing with all the outside noise about Fox’s status.

But a few things also point in Georgia’s favor.

That first game was at Vanderbilt, which isn’t as strong away from its home court. The Commodores are 1-10 in road games and 0-2 in neutral games. Georgia, on the other hand, was 2-1 in neutral-site games, though that was back in November, when the season had a very different outlook.

Georgia also isn’t playing that badly right now. Both of those losses last week were very close games in which UGA had late leads, only to blow them. And prior to that, the Bulldogs had lost three of their past four.

But even if Georgia wins, it will have a formidable task the next day: It would turn around and play an afternoon game against fifth-seeded Missouri, the de facto home team in this SEC tournament, which may get back freshman star Michael Porter.

Fox and the Bulldogs hope that’s a problem they can worry about Thursday.

What’s next for Georgia?

If it wins, Georgia would play fifth-seeded Missouri on Thursday afternoon. If Georgia loses, that likely means the end of the season, as the Bulldogs would not have a good enough resume to earn a bid to the NIT Tournament.
