Georgia football a prohibitive favorite over Middle Tennessee

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia football opened as a 32 1/2-point favorite over Middle Tennessee in next Saturday’s game at Sanford Stadium, according to VegasInsider.com.

The Blue Raiders (1-1) and No. 3-ranked Bulldogs (2-0) have a 7:15 p.m. kickoff in this ESPN2 game that can be heard on WSB 95.5 FM, 750 AM.

Georgia is coming off a 41-17 blowout win at South Carolina, a game the Bulldogs led 20-10 at the half before completely taking over with three straight touchdowns in the third quarter.

Several national media types suggested the game against the Gamecocks had “trendy upset” potential, but the Bulldogs didn’t get caught up in the hype.

There will be far less national attention paid to this game. Georgia is expected to win convincingly over the Blue Raiders.

The Bulldogs have a mostly soft home schedule this season, with only Auburn (Nov. 10) appearing to pose a serious threat.

Middle Tennessee is coming off a 61-37 win over FCS Tennessee-Martin.

The Blue Raiders opened the season with a 35-7 loss to Vanderbilt, another of the teams Georgia is playing host to in Sanford Stadium this season

The Bulldogs are playing four Tennessee teams in Athens this season: Austin Peay, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

The other home games are against Auburn, Massachusetts and Georgia Tech.

Future Georgia football schedules include games with Oregon and Clemson, but those games are scheduled to be played in Atlanta, leaving the Athens market dry of marquee non-conference matchups.

The Bulldogs have outgrown the rivalry game with Georgia Tech, a program on the slide after a 49-38 loss to South Florida last Saturday.

The Georgia game with Georgia Tech holds virtually no interest outside the northern Georgia region, unable to compete with such rivalries as Florida-Florida State, Alabama-Auburn or Michigan-Ohio State.

For now, however, the Bulldogs are focused on each opponent as Smart looks to guide them back to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.

Middle Tennessee provides an overmatched opponent that will give Georgia another opportunity to play several young players and get freshman quarterback Justin Fields more experience.
