Georgia football podcast: UGA LB D’Andre Walker quietly produced an amazing stat last season

Beginning of the show: I discuss how Georgia has a lot to replace from the 2017 team that won the SEC, beat Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl and appeared in the National Championship Game against Alabama. But one area in which the Bulldogs might be fine is outside linebacker, thanks to the promise shown by Walker.

12-minute mark: I discuss how Walker might be better than people realize, and he could be capable of providing UGA with the spark it has been missing in the attempt to become a truly elite defense. Yes, it will be hard to replace some of the defensive talent lost from the 2017 team. But Walker could be bound for big things in Athens.

15-minute mark: SEC Country Live’s Mike Johnson joins the show. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Alabama’s quarterback situation
  • Walker as someone who can become more than a situational pass rusher
  • Just how important sacks are for a defense
  • Johnson’s opinion about SEC Media Days
  • Is the fact that Alabama is a big favorite to become SEC champion an advantage for Georgia?

35-minute mark: I look at other headlines from around the SEC, including how ESPN didn’t mention any SEC pass rushers among the nation’s best, USA Today praising wide receiver Jonathan Giles, Alabama losing 2018 signee Jordan Davis, SEC coaches potentially facing a hot-seat situation this year and John Isner’s remarkable run at Wimbledon.

40-minute mark: I unveil the latest Dawg Day Q&A, which asks which former Georgia athlete do you still support.

End of Show: I update the Gator Hater Countdown.

Social media reacts to Falcons playing hardball with Julio Jones

It has become clear that the Falcons won’t be offering Julio Jones a new contract before the season. Jones, who didn’t attend OTAs or mandatory minicamp, is seeking an extension -- and presumably a raise -- on the five-year deal he signed in 2016. Here’s a sampling of the social media reaction -- on both sides -- with players...

The Braves will trade for a reliever. Do they also need a starter?

Every point Alex Anthopoulos made in recent conversation would, had I been a member of Parliament, have been met with a lusty “Hear! Hear!” – every point save one. I agreed with the general manager’s stated intent not to pay big for a rental (meaning Manny Machado, since traded to the Dodgers). I share the belief...

The Atlanta Braves made switch-hitting shortstop Chipper Jones the No. 1 overall pick of baseball’s amateur draft Monday, then signed him to a $275,000 bonus, the most lucrative contract ever awarded a high school player. Reluctant to take high school pitcher Todd Van Poppel, who said he would attend the University of Texas rather than sign,...
