Georgia football coach Kirby Smart heaps praise on quarterback Jake Fromm

ATHENS — Georgia football has an ongoing competition at quarterback, that much has been made clear throughout the offseason.

And while Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart didn’t give any indication of when he might name a starter, he did remark on how good sophomore Jake Fromm has looked in fall camp.

“His understanding of what we’re trying to do offensively, his step now is he knows what the defense is doing now before the defense does it, especially against us, who he goes against every day,” Smart said following Wednesday’s practice.

“So his development has been good because he played all these games. He understands where the weakness is in each defense and he can exploit that. He has really good command of the huddle and has good presence.”

Fromm was the FWAA Freshman All-American quarterback selection last season after leading the Bulldogs to an SEC championship and national championship game appearance.

Incoming freshman Justin Fields has displayed great talent in practices, and Smart and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney have both been complimentary.

But Fromm, it seems, is making the best use of his SEC game experience.

“He can draw us offsides,” Smart remarked on Wednesday. “He’s doing a good job from a communication standpoint. He always did. I just think he knows the inside and outside of everything a little better now.”
