Georgia commit Nolan Smith II is the new No.1 player in the country for 2019

One of Georgia’s prized commits in the recruiting class of 2019 just got a huge boost.

Nolan Smith II, a 5-star defensive end prospect from Savannah who plays at IMG Academy in Florida, is now the No.1 player in his class, according to the newly released rankings from 247Sports on Thursday.

“The Georgia commit is polished, dominated elite competition last year as an underclassman, and at 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, he has no size concerns,” 247Sports’ Barton Simmons writes. “Smith is the rare prospect that is both safe and has immense upside.”

Smith is a longtime Bulldogs commitment who has made a significant effort to recruit a lot of other big name talent to Athens since he committed.

After bringing in the No. 3-ranked class in 2017 and the No. 1 class for 2018, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs currently rank No. 15 nationally on the 247Sports team composite. That low ranking is mostly due to just sheer volume of commitments. Georgia only has 10 pledges right now, but three of them are 5-star prospects.

This is a breaking news story that will continue to be updated.

Social media reacts to Falcons playing hardball with Julio Jones

It has become clear that the Falcons won’t be offering Julio Jones a new contract before the season. Jones, who didn’t attend OTAs or mandatory minicamp, is seeking an extension -- and presumably a raise -- on the five-year deal he signed in 2016. Here’s a sampling of the social media reaction -- on both sides -- with players...

The Braves will trade for a reliever. Do they also need a starter?

Every point Alex Anthopoulos made in recent conversation would, had I been a member of Parliament, have been met with a lusty “Hear! Hear!” – every point save one. I agreed with the general manager’s stated intent not to pay big for a rental (meaning Manny Machado, since traded to the Dodgers). I share the belief...
