Cayman Islands trip ahead for Bulldogs, Panthers

After Thad Matta turned down Georgia's offer, the school may turn to Tom Crean. Crean was born March 25, 1966 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Crean's wife, Joani, is the sister of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh. Georgia reportedly reached out to Crean to gauge his interest in the job soon after it fired Mark Fox. Crean previously coached at Marquette and Indiana. The Georgia's men's basketball team will take part in the Cayman Islands Classic early next season against Illinois State.

The teams’ will meet at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, UGA announced Thursday.

Georgia State also will take part in the tournament.

The other first-round matchups are Akron vs. Clemson at noon, St. Bonaventure vs. Georgia State at 5 p.m., and Boise State vs. Creighton at 7:30 p.m.

The Georgia-Illinois State winner will go against the Akron-Clemson winner at 2:30 p.m. the next day, while the losers of those games will meet at noon that day.

Georgia State would play at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 with an opening-round victory or at 5 p.m. with a loss.

The championship, third-, fifth- and seventh-place games are scheduled for Nov. 21.
