ATHENS — As expected, Georgia outside linebackers coach Dan Lanning and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann will share the defensive coordinator title for the Bulldogs in 2019.
That information came to light Friday as UGA responded to an open records request from DawgNation and other media outlets seeking new title and salary information on Georgia’s assistant coaches for the 2019 season. That information was released Friday afternoon and it revealed several new titles. Including:
- James Coley: Offensive Coordinator / QB Coach $950,000
- Sam Pittman: Associate Head Coach / OL Coach $900,000
- Dell McGee: Run Game Coordinator / RB Coach $650,000
- Cortez Hankton: Pass Game Coordinator / WR Coach $550,000
- Todd Hartley: TE Coach $300,000
- Dan Lanning: Defensive Coordinator / OLB Coach $750,000
- Glenn Schumann: Co-Defensive Coordinator / ILB Coach $550,000
- Charlton Warren: DB Coach $600,000
- Tray Scott: DL Coach $470,000
- Scott Fountain: Special Teams Coordinator $325,000
Technically, Lanning is the defensive coordinator and Schumann is the co-defensive coordinator and that is reflected in their salaries. Each made $325,000 as defensive assistants last year. Lanning’s salary was doubled while Schumann received a $225,000 raise.
That hierarchy is similar to what Georgia had last year on offense, when Jim Chaney was listed as the coordinator and Coley was the co-coordinator. Chaney called all the plays. Now the sole offensive coordinator, Coley received a $100,000 raise on Friday.
Accordingly, the assumption is that, Lanning will be the defensive play-caller. For the moment at least, that is left to speculation as Georgia coach Kirby Smart was not available to comment on Friday. He was at Robins Air Force speaking to troops preparing for deployment.
Interestingly, the total of Georgia’s football coaching salaries ($6.045 million) actually represents a decrease from last year ($6.42). That’s primarily because the Bulldogs are no longer paying former defensive coordinator Mel Tucker ($1.5 million) or offensive coordinator Jim Chaney ($950,000). Tucker is now head coach at Colorado and Chaney accepted to a $650,000 raise to return to Tennessee.
The Bulldogs now have one of the youngest coaching staffs in the SEC. Lanning is 32 and in only his second year with at UGA. Schumann is 28 after coming to Georgia with Smart, for who he worked as a defensive quality control assistant. The 34-year-old Scott is in only his third year with the program.
Georgia’s a little more experienced on the offensive side of the ball. Receivers coach Cortez Hankton is only 28 while Coley and McGee are each 45. Pittman, 57, and Fountain, 52, are both veterans.
