The Hawks are working on an agreement to add Mavericks assistant Melvin Hunt to new head coach Lloyd Pierce’s staff, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations.
The person said a deal had yet to be reached as of early Monday evening. The New York Times first reported that the Hawks and Hunt are in discussions.
Hunt has been with the Mavericks for the past three seasons. He previously was an assistant with the Nuggets (2010-2015), Cavaliers (2005-2010), Lakers (2004-05) and Rockets (1999-2004). Hunt was Nuggets interim head coach for 23 games during the 2014-15 season.
Pierce was a Cavaliers assistant-player development coordinator from 2007-2010, when Hunt was on the Cleveland staff. The Hawks on May 11 agreed to hire Pierce to succeed Mike Budenholzer, who was hired as Bucks head coach last week.
