Hawks center Plumlee out another 2-3 weeks with injury

The Hawks said center Miles Plumlee will miss another two to three weeks because of a right quad injury.

The injury forced Plumlee to leave the first exhibition game on Oct. 1 and he missed the next three games. The center wasn’t listed on the injury report before the Hawks played the Grizzlies on Monday but also didn’t play in that game.

Plumlee, 29, doesn’t project to be a part of the regular playing rotation this season. Center Dewayne Dedmon is the likely starter at center with Mike Muscala and John Collins also logging minutes at the position.

The Hawks acquired Plumlee in June as part of a trade with the Hornets. The Hawks sent center Dwight Howard and the 31st pick in the 2017 draft to the Hornets in exchange for Plumlee, Marco Belinelli and the 41st pick in the 2017 draft.

Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk made the trade in large part to gain some flexibility under the salary cap. Plumlee is owed $37.5 million over the next three seasons compared to the roughly $47 million remaining on Howard’s contract over the next two seasons. Belinelli’s contract expires after this season.

Next step for Hawks rookie Collins: ‘Shoot the damn ball’ for three
Hawks rookie John Collins has attempted just 19 3-point shots in the NBA. That’s not nearly enough to determine if he can be a good 3-point shooter.  But he’s attempted 15 of those 3-pointers over his past 21 games, making six, after he’d missed four attempts over his previous 32 games. Collins said that’s enough makes...

As some teams tank, Budenholzer says Hawks will stay the course

For the first practice after the All-Star break, Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said he added a “wrinkle here or a new play there” but doesn’t anticipate making any “drastic changes” to the way his team plays over its final 23 games. That includes how he distributes playing time among his veteran and young players. ...

Mark Cuban says ‘losing is best option’ for Mavs. Do Hawks feel the same?
What Mavericks franchise owner Mark Cuban said on Julius Erving’s podcast Monday isn’t that controversial. It’s just that he said the unspeakable, at least for people in his position. "I'm probably not supposed to say this but, like, I just had dinner with a bunch of our guys the other night, and here we are, you know, we weren't...
