Vizcaino draws closer to return, Ramirez struggles in rehab outing

Braves relievers Arodys Vizcaino and Jose Ramirez pitched for Single-A Rome in the postseason Friday night as both work their way back from injuries.

Vizcaino has been sidelined by shoulder inflammation. He hasn’t appeared in a major league game since July 11, and A.J. Minter has since assumed closer duties.

The loss of Vizcaino had a domino effect on the Braves’ bullpen, and the unit mightily struggled before Brad Brach and Jonny Venters arrived as reinforcements. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett, tossing a scoreless inning Sept. 3.

He did so again Friday, but Rome was eliminated. Vizcaino isn’t eligible to return from the 60-day disabled list until Sept. 12, the series finale in San Francisco. He could rejoin the team and continue throwing in the meantime.

Vizcaino would be a late boost. He had a 1.65 ERA with 34 strikeouts across 32-2/3 innings, while adding a career-high 15 saves. The Braves could reinsert him slowly, having him pitch an inning every few days in preparation for a potential role in the postseason.

Ramirez, meanwhile, was tagged for four earned runs on four hits while only recorded one out Friday. He likely won’t rejoin the club in 2018.

Braves win and the champagne is on ice

The champagne is on ice. The Phillies punched. The Braves counter-punched. And the latter was a near-knockout blow. The Braves scored five times in a wild seventh inning, capped by a two-run single by Johan Camargo, for a 6-5 victory Friday night at SunTrust Park. The win reduced the Braves’ magic number to clinch the National League East to...

What’s the ‘magic number’ for the Atlanta Braves now?

The Braves’ ‘magic number’ is down to two after a 6-5 win over the Phillies Friday night. All they have to do is win one of the next two games against Philadelphia to earn the NL East Division title. Failing that, they still have six more games to play to finish off the second-place Phillies. Any combination of Braves victories...

No Vizcaino tonight, but back-to-backs getting closer

Arodys Vizcaino was not available to the Braves out of the bullpen for Friday night’s game against the Phillies. After pitching a perfect eighth inning in a key win Thursday night, the goal is to get the closer to pitch back-to-back days before the end of the final homestand of the regular season and, hopefully, for the postseason. Vizcaino returned...

Sean Newcomb out of Braves rotation - for now

Sean Newcomb is out of the Braves rotation. For now. The left-hander was skipped from a scheduled start Saturday during this week’s final homestand of the season. Braves manager said the young pitcher will work out of the bullpen for now and the situation re-evaluated following an off day Monday before a regular-season ending six-game road trip...

For Markakis, this is what Braves’ rebuild has been all about

This is what the Braves’ rebuild has been all about. Just ask Nick Markakis. He’s been here for much of it. Markakis is in his fourth season with the Braves, after nine with the Orioles, after signing as a free agent in 2014. After winning 96 games in 2013 – the last time the Braves reached the playoffs – the win totals were...
