Two bad baseball teams playing on a Wednesday afternoon equaled another small Braves crowd.
The Braves officially announced an attendance of 17,949 but, subjectively, there are no more than 10,000 spectators at Turner Field to watch the game against the Marlins today. That number is boosted by several groups of schoolchildren on field trips.
Four days earlier the Braves played the Yankees before their largest official home crowd of the season (49,243). The season-low announced attendance is 12,595, for a game against the Nationals on April 29. The first game of this Marlins series had the second- smallest official crowd at 12,916.
The Braves (54-78) have lost seven games in a row and 14 of their past 15. They are 12-36 since improving their record to 42-42 on July 7.
The Marlins (54-79) are a half game behind the Braves after winning the first two games of the series. A victory today would move them ahead of the Braves to third place in the NL East. The Phillies (53-80) are last.
