Mike Foltynewicz starts Wednesday as rotation stays on schedule

The Braves will pitch Mike Foltynewicz on regular rest Wednesday, allowing their All-Star starter and the rest of the rotation to stay on routine before the All-Star break.

Manager Brian Snitker indicated giving Foltynewicz another day of rest, perhaps starting lefty Luiz Gohara, was an option. But the team opted to send Foltynewicz out on regular rest.

“Stay on a normal schedule,” Snitker said. “He’s good to go for tomorrow. A few years ago, you wouldn’t have even thought twice about him pitching tomorrow. Now in the industry, you talk about it a little more. He’s right on time, and that’ll give the rest of our guys their start before the break.”

The Braves host the Blue Jays on Tuesday and Wednesday. They’re off Thursday before finishing the first half with Arizona.

Despite a recent lackluster outing in Milwaukee, Foltynewicz has emerged as one of the best pitchers in the National League. He’s posted a 2.37 ERA in 95 innings, striking out 114 and walking 40.

Foltynewicz, 26, was named to his first All-Star team as a result.

“It’s taken the steps that we had hoped it would,” Snitker said. “He had a period last year where he got on a good roll and then fell off a little bit. This year in spring training, it’s been from the get-go.”
