Braves’ Anibal Sanchez pitches well but Gwinnett is no-hit

Friday didn’t go well for the Braves and it wasn’t a good night for their Triple-A affiliate, the Gwinnett Stripers, either.

The Stripers were no-hit by Columbus in Lawrenceville. The Braves lost to the Red Sox 6-2 in Boston.

Shane Bieber tossed  seven no-hit innings for the Clippers in a rain-shortened 7-0 win at Coolray Field.

Bieber faced the minimum 21 batters over the seven innings and struck out seven and walked none. Xavier Avery was the only Gwinnett player to reach base in the game, taking first base on a fielding error by Clippers’ shortstop Eric Stamets with one out in the third inning. Avery was thrown out stealing.

Anibal Sanchez, making his second Gwinnett start while on rehab from the Braves, allowed just one hit while striking out four over three innings.

The Stripers are 19-27.

Teheran’s first-inning woes strike again

Julio Teheran’s alarming first-inning performance this season might not be a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma, but it’s nonetheless difficult to figure out. The Braves’ five-time opening-day starter and two-time former All-Star has not pitched like either of those descriptions in a majority of starts this season, and the...

Teheran slammed early, Braves lose game and series to Orioles

Baseball mojo can be a maddening, temperamental mistress, and that’s not even taking into account the unpredictable state of Julio Teheran’s pitching. And so it is that the Braves, who hadn’t lost a home series since early May, saw that streak snapped Saturday when Teheran gave up a first-inning grand slam to Mark Trumbo in a 7-5...

Braves closer Vizcaino dealing with balky shoulder

The Braves know that if they hope to have closer Arodys Vizcaino healthy for the long haul of a season, they’re going to have to be a bit more careful with him than most other teams are with their closers. “Viz has been put back together a couple of times, so there’s always going to be an awareness of that,” Braves manager Brian...

Braves relievers Winkler, Moylan feel the weight of 15-inning loss

With closer Arodys Vizcaino nursing a sore shoulder and manager Brian Snitker wanting to wait another day before using him, the Braves turned to Dan Winkler Friday in a ninth-inning save opportunity with a two-run lead against the Orioles.  And he blew it sky-high in a six-run inning. And after the Braves scored four runs in the bottom of the...

Braves rally after bullpen collapse in ninth, but lose to Orioles in 15 innings

On opening night of Hank Aaron weekend at SunTrust Park, the Braves wore sharp 1970s throwbacks Friday, but for much of the game against the lowly Orioles they hit like the great Aaron seldom did: Not very well. Then after the offense awakened to give the Braves a late-innings lead, the bullpen collapsed in a six-run ninth that turned a 3-1 lead into...
