Acuna, Toussaint, Riley make AFL ‘Fall Stars’ game roster

The Braves’ best prospects have taken over the Arizona Fall League. Three of them were selected to play in the AFL ‘Fall Stars’ game on Saturday.

Outfielder Ronald Acuna, pitcher Touki Toussaint and third baseman Austin Riley will play in the game. It will be broadcast on MLB Network.

Acuna and Riley have appeared as two of the most advanced bats in Arizona. Riley at one point hit for the cycle, the first in the AFL since 2008. Acuna had a two-homer game four days ago.

Each player has hit three home runs, though Braves catcher prospect Austin Jackson leads them with five. Both Acuna and Riley could debut next season, with Acuna likely to be on the opening day roster.

Toussaint, meanwhile, has overpowered hitters at times. He has 10 strikeouts in 6-1/3 innings. He spoke with the AJC as the season was winding down about how the Braves’ environment has helped his development.

A former first-round draft pick, Toussaint projects as an upper-tier strikeout arm. His stats haven’t reflected dominance (9.95 ERA), but stats shouldn’t be taken too seriously in the AFL.

The Braves trailed 6-0 after five innings and scored 10 runs in the final four innings to pull off a 10-9 comeback win against the Marlins Sunday at SunTrust Park, but it was the six-run ninth inning that made this a rally for the ages. Remarkably, it came eight years to the day of the Braves’ 10-9 walk-off win against the Reds when they...

Braves’ Tucker has shown value as pinch-hitter

Preston Tucker appears safe for the time being on the Braves’ roster. But before Sunday there was at least some cause for concern, because he has a minor league option and could be sent down without going through waivers. But that was before the Braves released veteran Jose Bautista on Sunday and made Johan Camargo their starting third baseman...

Took longer than expected, but Camargo becomes Braves’ starting 3B

At one point in Saturday’s game against the Marlins, Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson and second baseman Ozzie Albies joked with each other that having Johan Camargo at third base made it feel like the 2016 Double-A Mississippi Braves again, and what a good a feeling that was. They’ll have it on a regular basis now that Camargo has been...
