Atlanta United: Things to know this week

Here are a few things to know about Atlanta United this week:

1. Josef Martinez set the MLS single-season scoring record when he scored his 28th goal during last week’s 2-1 win at Orlando

2. Martinez has eight games remaining to push the record into the stratosphere. That eight-game stretch will start on Sunday at D.C. United.

3. The win against Orlando increased Atlanta United’s league-leading points total to 54. It leads New York Red Bulls by two points in the race for the Supporters’ Shield. It leads NYCFC by six points. The contenders in the West have fallen away.

4. Atlanta United will play at D.C. United on Sunday at its new home, Audi Field. D.C. United was beaten 1-0 by New York Red Bulls last night. D.C. United trails sixth-place Montreal by six points in the race for the sixth and final playoff spot in the East. Led by Wayne Rooney, D.C. United had won three consecutive and four of give before the loss to the Red Bulls.

5. Atlanta United is on pace to break the league’s single-season record for points (69), set by Toronto last season. It also leads the league in goals (55), goal difference (plus-25), and points on the road (26).
