Atlanta United’s Martinez may have broken nose

Atlanta United’s Josef Martinez may have suffered a broken nose in the first half of Wednesday’s 2-0 win against Columbus at MAPFRE Stadium.

Martinez, after scoring his league-leading 14th goal in the 30th minute in the first half, was subbed off at halftime because he couldn’t breathe, according to manager Gerardo Martino.

Martinez and Columbus’ Artur knocked heads on the goal. Trainers examined Martinez for several minutes. He returned to the game.

Martino said they hope to know more on the extent of Martinez’s injury in the coming days. Atlanta United is off until it hosts Chicago in the fifth round of the U.S. Open Cup on June 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

It was the second time in as many games that Atlanta United was forced to sub off one of its standout players. Martinez’s leaving followed Miguel Almiron being forced off at halftime of last week’s game at NYCFC with a shoulder injury. He started Wednesday’s game.

Ronald Acuna is the superstar Braves - and baseball - needed

The Braves’ path back to relevancy has been paved by a 20-year-old who’s just being a kid. It only took one swing to put Ronald Acuna into the record books again. This time it was his first multi-homer game, a four-RBI effort that gave the Braves a 10-6 win over the Marlins.  “I never have (seen anything like it) in my lifetime...

- Photos: Two more home runs for Ronald Acuna There isn’t a hotter hitter on the planet than the Braves’ own rookie phenom. Ronald Acuna smashed the first ball he saw over the wall for his third consecutive lead-off home run. Charlie Culberson plastered the next pitch for a 2-0 lead. Then came the seventh inning. The teams entered...

Georgia Tech going through ‘doldrums’ in preseason

With the temperature reaching 90 degrees with high humidity, Georgia Tech slogged through a draining afternoon practice Tuesday. “It was humid,” coach Paul Johnson said. “This might have been the worst one.” Johnson didn’t see the resolve that he was hoping out of his team, which will start the season with two games likely...

Good grief. Ronald Acuna does it again - and AGAIN

It’s getting silly now, but silly stuff can be fun stuff. Ronald Acuna just hit a leadoff home run. He did that twice yesterday. He also did it Saturday. On Sunday, he sort of rested: His homer that day came with two out in the second. To answer the obvious question: No, I’ve never seen anything like this, and neither have you. Because...

Georgia WR Jayson Stanley hasn’t let past missteps slow him down

ATHENS — Georgia’s Jason Stanley is one of those kinds of players coaches love. He may not be a star with the fans or a standout on the stat sheet. He’s just a solid, there-every-day, execute-his-assignment football player. That’s why what happened to Stanley last December was so out of character for...
