Atlanta United’s Greg Garza returned to training with the team for the first time Friday since sustaining a shoulder injury May 20.

Garza, a 27-year-old fullback, underwent surgery on the shoulder less than two weeks later.

The team posted on Twitter on Friday that Garza was the first one out for the morning session. Atlanta United manager Gerardo Martino has said several times in the past weeks that Garza was working on getting the shoulder back to close to full strength before he rejoined his teammates.

Garza had sustained several injuries to the shoulder since joining Atlanta United. It was injured in the opening minutes of last year’s All-Star Game in Chicago, and then injured again at Minnesota on March 31. Garza missed the next game at LAFC but returned the next week for the game at NYCFC.

Atlanta United is in first place in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of New York Red Bulls. Each team has two games remaining. Atlanta United will host Chicago on Oct. 21.

Mikey Ambrose, Chris McCann and George Bello have played left fullback or left wingback in Garza’s absence.
