After years of planning, Columbus recently opened its $24 million project to transform its downtown stretch of the Chattahoochee into a whitewater gem that it hopes will draw up to 100,000 whitewater enthusiasts a year and millions of tourist dollars. But the day after it opened, it looked like a slow-motion train wreck, complete with an online video that went viral showing boat after boat crashing and flipping in the biggest rapid and tossing 70-plus people into the churning water.
