Caroline was wet and cold when she was found in a trash can Tuesday.

A puppy was found abandoned in a trash can at the Georgia-South Carolina border earlier this week, but is now recovering and is expected to be put up for adoption.

Someone heard the dog, given the name Caroline by Hart County Animal Rescue, crying in the trash can at the I-85 welcome center Tuesday, the agency said in a Facebook post.

“Some piece of scum decided to just trash her. She was freezing, wet, hungry and scared,” the post said.

Caroline, who weighs 6 pounds, was taken to Lavonia Animal Hospital, where she got “the spirit back in her eyes and a smile on her little face,” Hart County Animal Rescue said.

After some time in an animal hospital, Caroline got a little more spirit in her, officials said.

Officials thought the dog might belong to a family.

However, they also opened up applications to adopt Caroline. The deadline is Friday at 5 p.m., but officials said they have already received many inquiries. They also directed interested applicants to the number of other dogs that people can adopt.

A number of people commented on the Facebook post saying they had already applied to take in the pup.

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office said it has not received a formal complaint about the abandoned dog.
