Atlanta firefighters work to extinguish a colossal fire that caused the collapse of I-85 in Midtown at the height of rush hour Thursday evening, stranding thousands of motorists and shuttering a main gateway to the heart of Atlanta indefinitely.

That’s not snow. These Atlanta firefighters were knee-deep in fire retardant foam sprayed at the site of the I-85 collapse.

Firefighters from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport came to the collapse scene, working to extinguish the massive fire with the foam they would normally use for runway or airplane fires.

Jackson Klinefelter took these dramatic photos of the massive fire that erupted beneath the raised portion of I-85 near Piedmont Road. Here, rush hour commuters carefully make their way past the blaze.

Klinefelter also snapped this picture showing how intense the blaze was during rush hour. Drivers were just feet away from the inferno.

And in this picture, Klinefelter captures yet another angle of the billowing black smoke as the fire raged beneath Interstate 85.

A Georgia Department of Transportation alert sign warns motorists that Interstate 85 north before the Ga. 400 exit is closed due to the massive fire and subsequent bridge collapse that happened March 30, 2017, during the 6 p.m. rush hour. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

But this was the scene earlier near the I-85 north bridge collapse near Piedmont Road in northeast Atlanta.
