Sheriff deserves praise for texting crackdown
Big praise and kudos to our hands-on, awesome Sheriff Ron Freeman (“Forsyth targets texting, driving,” News, Sept. 10) for cracking down on distracted drivers. Texting and driving has truly gotten out of control and it’s about time this issue has been seriously addressed. I personally love seeing the signs posted throughout our county reminding us to stay focused on the road instead of looking down. We all realize no message is important enough to cause an accident or put our families in danger. What kind of example are we setting for our children and grandchildren as we respond to simple text messages as we drive? We must practice what we preach. Sheriff Freeman has even taken it a step further urging others in law enforcement throughout Georgia to follow suit. Why would anyone refuse to join this campaign? Thank you, Ron for being a proactive sheriff in more ways than one.

New stadium is nice but wasteful
After attending the Georgia Tech and Tennessee game on Labor Day, I must admit that the Mercedes-Benz stadium is an engineering masterpiece — as well it should be with an admitted cost of $1.2 billion. Lest we forget, that is 1,200 million dollars. Who knows how much it really cost? Though the stadium is called the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, it is owned by the state which means there is an interface with the taxpayers.
There are currently eight domed stadiums in NFL cities — most in the South where weather is not all that bad. Now Atlanta has two of these monoliths, illustrating just how dumb we can get. Contrasting the darkness and gloominess of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium with the Bobby Dodd Stadium I attended on the following Saturday, I can only say, give me an outdoor stadium any day of the week. Any guesses on when the old stadium will be torn down. Maybe Arthur Blank can pay the cost of that little project.
