Hollywood celebs’ boycott threat is laughable

Thanks so much to Stacey Abrams for trying to dissuade TV celebrities from boycotting Georgia (“Ga. leaders facing revolt by film stars,” Metro, Nov. 19). I don’t know where I would be without their cultural contributions to my otherwise miserable life, not to mention their intelligent political advice. It’s quite obvious the Republican voters stole the race for governor by callously registering correctly (according to blatantly illegal standards), voting early, etc. My only excuse for not voting was that I couldn’t tear myself away from all of the outstanding theatrical entertainment available to me, 15 feet from my couch. However, if these entertainers/intellectual leaders decide to leave our narrow-minded state in protest of the outcome of the race, I will pack up my TV set and follow!

New Dems in Congress a needed power-check

A letter writer stated the Democrats’ control of the House would only be a “noisy distraction” since Trump could sharpen his veto and executive order pencils (Readers Write, Nov. 18). However, the blue wave that gave the Democrats at least a 37-seat majority in the House contains a group that looks a lot more like the real America than Trump’s all-white crowds. And it represents an America that is fed up with Trump’s outrageous actions and incompetent governance. Health care, better education, better jobs and better government propelled the wave that will also put a check on Trump’s worst impulses, such as separating children from their parents or creating a migrant invasion. To the extent the Senate and Trump veto the actions of this Congress, they will make Trump a one-term president. Bring it on.
