Stansfield A. Turner, who served as CIA director under President Jimmy Carter, has died at age 94, The Associated Press reported.

President Carter on Thursday praised Turner for his reforms at the CIA.

"Rosalynn and I join countless Americans in mourning the loss of a truly great man," Carter said in a statement released by The Carter Center in Atlanta.

Here is the full text of President Carter’s statement about the death of Stansfield Turner:

"Admiral Stansfield Turner was a remarkable public servant and a dear personal friend. Even from our time at the Naval Academy, I knew Stan would do remarkable things, and throughout his distinguished career, he certainly did. When I was elected, I had no doubt who I thought should lead our entire intelligence community, and Stan did an extraordinary job. I always will be grateful for his reforms and for the outstanding intelligence he provided me. Rosalynn and I join countless Americans in mourning the loss of a truly great man, and we will keep his family in our hearts and prayers during this difficult time."
